Mzansi Wethu was introduced in the early 2010s to give lower packages access to local drama series and reality shows from Mzansi Magic. This would include shows like iThonga, The Throne, Date My Family and Our Perfect Wedding.
By dumping Mzansi from the name we can only assume one of two things.
Firstly, MultiChoice is looking to give Wethu+ a lot more independence and not treat it entirely like an Mzansi Magic repeats channel. This means consumers might as well expect more exclusive content from the existing News On Wethu.
Another with the closure of Mzansi Music and Mzansi Bioskop, it could be that MultiChoice wants to offload this content onto Wethu+. This is just speculation but with the name change I wouldn't be entirely shocked.
Aside from the rebrand to Wethu+, MultiChoice might be launching four new channels to their platform in the coming weeks. This would include France24, 3BN Africa allegedly and eMedia's eReality and eSeries channels.
