M Movies Unveils Dreadful Revamped Channel Offering On DStv And GOtv, Revives M Movies Stars

As reported, MultiChoice will be axing it's M-Net Movies 1 channel on DStv from 16 September and merging it into M-Net Movies 2 to form M Movies+. They'll also be renaming it's M-Net Movies 3 and 4 channels to M Movies Stars and M Movies Legends.

MultiChoice had sent notice of these changes to its consumers in other African countries with South Africa once again being the last to recieve notice. And similar to the new SuperSport lineup, they're being very vague about the details of this offering.

Also strange is why they're now being referred to as M Movies as if they're being branded off as new channels when M-Net Movies was always styled to appear like M Movies.

M Movies+ is set to replace M-Net Movies 1 and 2 on DStv creating a single destination with a broader selection of movies. Presuming this means MultiChoice is reinstating M-Net Movies Premiere although not by name.

And that the former M-Net Movies 2 leaves the 90s and early 2000s films to M Movies Stars and M Movies Legends like it's supposed to. Rather than repeating Fast & Furious, Despicable Me and Harry Potter across all 4 M-Net movie channels.

M Movies Stars is basically a revival to M-Net Movies All Stars is set to replace M-Net Movies 3 offering popular and blockbusters movie content. I'm guessing it will serve as a bridge between M Movies+ and M Movies Legends.

When they use "popular" and "blockbuster" that doesn't new movies but likely more Fast & Furious due to Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, and Despicable Me as it starred Collin Farrell and Miranda Cosgrove.

If anything, M-Net Movies 4 is set to undergo one of the most bizarre changes as it becomes M Movies Legends for classic movies. Remember when premium movies were divided amongst M-Net Movies 3 and 4, I'm guessing that comes to a hault.

M-Net Movies 4 has to be the channel that went through the most restructuring during its lifespan. It was first film festival channel under M-Net Movies Zone and currently a family based channel offering movies with sequels or from big franchises.

Under M Movies Legends, I don't expect for that to change but honestly I think it's going to lean more with TNT and Movie Room. These are channels that glamourise the 90s and early 2000s and does Access consumers really more of that.

According to MultiChoice, these changes are intended to create stronger and more clearly defined content destinations. But does it really???

MultiChoice and M-Net could have repositioned M-Net Movies 3 to become some African infused channel with StudioCanal and other international films. Then have M-Net Movies 4 serve as a bridge between these two channels.

In France, Canal+ offers 3 movie channels which maintain this exact structure with Canal+ Cinema(s) and Canal+ BoxOffice being premier destinations. With Canal+ Grand Ecran serving as a bridge with older movies added to the mix.

Then again, we're still in the early days of Canal+ takeover and more channels are expected to be closing soon. By the time, these changes would have taken effect, MultiChoice would offer 9 movie channels which is still too many.

Especially if 8 out of the 9 channels broadcast the same movies so it will be kind of interesting to see how Canal+ tries to tackle that. My guess would be them making another attempt at axing eMedia's movie offering to bring down those numbers.

Aside from the axing of M-Net Movies 1, KykNET Lekker, Mzansi Bioskop and Mzansi Music will also be getting axed. With France24, possibly 3ABN International and a TV channel with a Magic Showcase info card to be added soon.
