Disney Jr. is a preschool oriented channel operated by The Walt Disney Company that features content catered for children aged 3 to 6 years. It is home to various shows including Doc McStuffins, Sofia The First, PJ Masks and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
In 1997, the channel first started out as a preschool block known as Disney Channel Little Kids before rebranding to Playhouse Disney in 1999. When a TV channel was first announced it was under the working title, Disney Kids.
Because Disney Channel Little Kids and Playhouse Disney weren't in Africa at the time. It was both SABC and M-Net through its K-TV brand that introduced these brands. MultiChoice was only able to follow up with a TV channel in 2011/2.
Coincidentally, The newly minted Disney Junior block officially replaced Playhouse Disney on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2011, with the standalone 24-hour channel following in 2012.
The only reason they chose to call it Disney Jr. was to properly align it's demographic with Nick Jr. The word "Junior" was a proper way the company was able to identify it's demographic which is basically between the toddler and preteen bracket.
Disney Kids was too broad of a trademark to use on a preschool channel and besides that they had already used this trademark for its global retails and merchandise. It could as well have been the name for their division of children channels or programs.
Disney executives, including then-Disney Channels Worldwide President Carolina Lightcap, wanted the new name to emphasize "multi-generational" storytelling. The word "Junior" not only connected them to preschoolers but their families as well.
Disney Kids felt more like PBS Kids and Disney wanted to carve out its own distinct identity. By using "Junior", viewers already know what to expect from the channel rather than "Kids" which could as well have been Disney Channel without live-action.
