GOtv is a subscription-based service operated by Canal+’s MultiChoice. It offers a mix of local and international channels covering movies, series, and sports. Essentially, it is a terrestrial (antenna-based) version of DStv with more limited capacity, making it a more affordable option for budget-conscious viewers.
Like DStv, GOtv previously included a streaming component called GOtv Stream. MultiChoice is now discontinuing this service at the end of October 2026. An on-screen message informs subscribers:
“GOtv, your complimentary streaming service, will end on 31 October 2026. Your GOtv subscription, package and decoder service will not be affected. No action is required. Visit your local GOtv website for more info.”
This means that from the end of October, GOtv subscribers — much like those on DStv Lite and DStv EasyView — will lose access to the streaming option. Canal+ is expected to roll out a replacement app under the Showmax brand (or a successor to it). The service is likely to be folded into DStv Stream, which is expected to remain available after GOtv Stream shuts down.
Following Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice, the French broadcaster has been evaluating the viability of running multiple streaming platforms: Canal+, Showmax, and DStv Stream. MultiChoice has already discontinued the standalone Showmax streamer, and GOtv Stream will follow suit from November.
Plans are underway for a “super app” to fill the gap left by Showmax, with DStv Stream expected to be absorbed into this new offering. With GOtv Stream being discontinued ahead of the Canal+ app’s full rollout, it appears that GOtv consumers may need a DStv subscription to access premium content such as SuperSport and Africa Magic online.
It is worth noting that GOtv viewers do not need a DStv decoder to access content. DStv Stream can also be accessed independently. However, those who remain on GOtv alone will find it significantly harder to watch this content online going forward.
MultiChoice recently revamped its DStv packages in South Africa, with a broader African rollout now underway. This raises questions about the future of existing GOtv packages — namely GOtv Supa, GOtv Max, GOtv Value, and GOtv Lite.
Given the limited number of channels available on GOtv, it seems unlikely that MultiChoice would introduce standalone Movies & Series or Sport packages. With the streaming counterpart being discontinued, the most probable outcome is a reduction in the number of GOtv packages. GOtv Lite, which is as constrained as DStv EasyView, is expected to continue, while Max, Value, and possibly Supa may be consolidated into fewer offerings.
More changes at Canal+/MultiChoice
Recently, it was reported that MultiChoice will remove the majority of Bollywood channels from the DStv Indian Add-on, while retaining StarPlus, Colors TV, and Vijay TV. Around the time of the DStv Expect+ announcements, further changes were already signalled.
MultiChoice is currently rebranding its DStv packages across other African countries. In addition to eReality and eSeries for South African DStv subscribers, there is talk of more sports and entertainment channels being added.
SuperSport Swahili is the first confirmed new channel for MultiChoice territories; it is described as a football-focused service. For several months, MultiChoice has also been running test cards for Magic Showcase and CineMagic, suggesting further details on these channels will be announced soon.
