A Modern Romeo and Juliet Story

Mahir represents Romeo. He is a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders — something many men can relate to. Besides caring for his ailing mother, he is caught between two families whose differences started with the tragic death of his father.

His love interest, Canfeza, is the Juliet of the story. She faces constant ridicule and difficult situations, which is often the standard treatment for female characters in these types of dramas. Her background has a strong Bollywood flavour: she lost her mother and was almost forced into a marriage with a violent man named Selim.

Where the Show Missed the Mark

Even after her marriage, more could have been done with Canfeza’s character and with several other supporting roles. To be frank, the series often feels like it normalises men doing all the important work while women are mostly limited to household activities.

Considering how young Canfeza’s character is, the show had a chance to set a better example for viewers. This is one of the areas where it missed its mark.

Double Standards in the Story

Looking at the central conflict, the series often paints Kürşat as the main cause of everyone’s problems. In reality, Mahir’s family were not completely innocent either. As is common in many dramas, a clear double standard appears here.

For example, when Kürşat’s long-lost son enters the story, Mahir makes it clear that he does not trust him. At the same time, Mahir’s grandmother — who once tried to end his wife’s life — is still allowed to remain part of both characters’ lives.

That said, from personal experience it is understandable why Mahir would distrust Canfeza’s family. He may have given his own family more chances because they were an important part of his father’s life while he was growing up.

Final Thoughts

Maanligsprokie delivers a dramatic story of love, revenge, and family conflict with clear echoes of Romeo and Juliet. While the central romance and the theme of how one decision can change everything work well, the series could have developed its female characters more strongly and treated both families with greater balance.

Fans of Turkish dramas who enjoy emotional, family-centred stories with a touch of classic tragedy will still find plenty to engage with. The 35-episode run gives the story enough time to unfold, even if some character arcs feel under-explored.
