Be My Sunshine (Ada Masali) Review: More Than A Turkish Romcom

Be My Sunshine (Ada Masali) is a Turkish drama television series produced by Ay Yapım who is known for drama series like Bloedspoor (Yargı) and Fenix (Alev Alev). The comedy series starred Ayça Ayşin Turan and Alp Navruz in leading roles.

This show has been garnering a lot of attention over the years despite being released in 2021 and after my cable provider decided to licence the show. I took this opportunity to give it watch and I've got to say it's an incredible series.

But before I can touch on that further here's a brief summary on Be My Sunshine 

Haziran is a city girl who loves the Istanbul lifestyle. She's also a natural-born worker and the daughter of a well-known fashion designer who's fallen on hard times. Her hectic life takes a dramatic turn when the company she works for asks her to travel to an exotic island to carry out an important mission: to gather information to pressure Poyraz into selling his land so a resort can be built. Poyraz, who has taken out a loan to keep his business afloat, refuses to sell. Haziran carries out her task without realizing how she was harming Poyraz, so when she realizes what she has done, she tries to help him. Day by day, amid comical situations and charming islanders, Haziran discovers that her lifestyle differs greatly from that of Poyraz, a man born on the peaceful island; but once there, love and the island itself will completely change her life.

While this series is regarded as a romcom, that's not actually what kept me glued to the show. After watching a couple of episodes, I noticed there's a lot of characters viewers can relate to in this series.

In my case, it would have to be Poyraz and Haziran who found each other on the island after losing both their fathers. You have Poyraz that gives a more introvert vibe and it takes an one introvert to know another introvert.

What he does is keep to himself and use his work as a means to escape the problems in his life. He maintains distance from friends and loved ones, this is his how is able to keep a cool head and we only get to see his vulnerable side through Haziran.

At first, Haziran appears as one of those girls who prefers eating at expensive restaurants, buying designer clothing and living in expensive hotels. But you learn earlier in the show that maybe she does all this to keep with appearances.

Maybe (just MAYBE) this is what she was to used to doing all her life and through the island she realised there's a part of her heritage that was stripped from her growing up. 

I've watched a couple of shows and was often told that you don't need anyone to make you feel happy, only you can find happiness. But looking back at this show I can say that maybe you need people in your life in order to see your worth.

I don't think Poyraz and Haziran ever expected to be a couple but these two were able to open up to each other in ways they could never do with a friend. They used their jobs as a means to make a difference in someone's life or feel important to anyone.

As for the islanders, I also have to applaud them for the closeness they share because it's not easy trusting people let alone finding friends. Yet Haziran who only stayed on the island for a couple of months was able to befriend a lot of people.

Can you find such relationships in the world, in my case I don't think so but maybe watching this show has taught me to be a little more patient about people in general.

Overall, I can say this is a great show to watch and while again it's being labelled as a romcom. I feel like these moments with the islanders makes it feel more than that and I hope you as a reader whose looking to watch this show can enjoy it too.
