Chowder is an American animated surreal comedy series created by C. H. Greenblatt for Cartoon Network. It starred Nicky Jones as Chowder, Dwight Schultz as Mung Daal, Tara Strong as Truffles, and John DiMaggio as Schnitzel.
Synopsis
The show follows a young, aspiring chef named Chowder and his everyday adventures as an apprentice at Chef Mung Daal’s catering company in the quirky city of Marzipan. Although Chowder means well, his huge appetite and scatterbrained nature constantly land him in chaotic situations.
He receives guidance from Mung’s wife Truffles, Mung’s strong but simple assistant Schnitzel, Mung’s rival Ms. Endive, and her apprentice Panini (who has a relentless crush on Chowder), along with a colourful cast of supporting characters.
Chowder premiered on November 2, 2007, and ended on August 7, 2010, after three seasons and 49 episodes. The series earned one Primetime Emmy Award win and two nominations, plus six Annie Award nominations.
Cartoon Network cancelled the show in August 2009, believing it no longer fitted the network’s shifting target demographic.
The Reboot That Never Happened
In May 2026, series creator C. H. Greenblatt revealed that in 2024 Cartoon Network had asked him to pitch a reboot aimed at a younger audience. The project, titled Chowder: First Course, was never greenlit because the network said it could not afford to produce it.
Greenblatt’s reimagining would have seen Chowder, Panini, and Gorgonzola as students at a culinary school. The rest of the original cast would have appeared as staff members, with the stories focusing more on the three young characters getting into trouble.
The news of the cancelled reboot came amid a broader wave of projects at the network that struggled to move forward for similar budget-related reasons. Reports also suggested Cartoon Network had been exploring a prequel series to Megas XLR that was ultimately dropped for comparable financial constraints.
