Canal+'s MultiChoice To Rename Maisha Magic East To Maisha Magic Loko, Adds SuperSport Swahili

Not long ago, Canal+’s MultiChoice in Kenya announced that it would be rebranding its DStv packages from 5 November. Alongside the package changes, the company will also rename Maisha Magic East to Maisha Magic Loko and introduce SuperSport Swahili as a new channel.

Maisha Magic East is an East African entertainment channel that focuses on original Swahili programming. It offers comedies, drama series and lifestyle shows such as Njoro wa Uba and Hullabaloo Estate. The channel mainly serves audiences in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

From 5 November it will rebrand as Maisha Magic Loko. From what we understand, the content itself will remain the same. The word “Loko” means “local” in Luganda and was likely borrowed from Pearl Magic Loko, another brand that operated in the same market.

The name change appears designed to make the channel feel more distinct. Keeping the “East” label for so long may have given the impression that M-Net was simply running localised versions of a broader Maisha Magic feed. Calling it Loko more clearly signals that the channel is built around local programming.

Maisha Magic Loko will form part of the new DStv Starter package, which is set to replace DStv Lite.

SuperSport Swahili will launch as a new channel on the DStv Sports package. From what we can gather, it is essentially a Swahili-language version of SuperSport Football. The line-up is expected to include CAF competitions, the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Champions League and the English Premier League.

As noted earlier, SuperSport Swahili will sit on the DStv Sports package, which will replace both DStv Compact and DStv Family in the region.

Other developments

In a further move to simplify its offering, MultiChoice will also drop Zee TV, Zee Cinema, SET Max, SET Asia and WION. The company plans to focus on stronger channels and will retain StarPlus, Colors TV and Vijay TV, all of which are distributed by JioStar.
