eMedia Launches Openview Stream: A Free Streaming Service Across Parts of Africa

Not long ago, eMedia Investments officially launched Openview Stream, a free digital streaming service that acts as the online companion to its existing Openview satellite platform.  

The service is currently available in seven countries: Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, and Mauritius.  

Openview Stream enters a growing field of free or low-cost streaming options in Africa, competing with platforms such as Afree TV, Viu, cAfrica.tv, and Safaricom Base.  

South Africa is not part of the initial launch. According to eMedia CEO Khalik Sherrif, the company is watching South Africa as a possible future market, with a potential rollout around 2029 or 2030. For now, eMedia is focusing on growing its existing South African streaming service, eVOD.  

One important detail for viewers: much of the content on the traditional Openview platform is licensed specifically for South Africa. As a result, popular channels such as SABC 1, SABC 2, SABC 3, SABC Sport, eExtra, and The Home Channel+ are not expected to appear on Openview Stream in the new markets.  

To fill those gaps, eMedia plans to introduce three new Africa-focused channels. In place of eExtra and Star Khanya, the company is looking to add four Bollywood channels for the Openview Stream territories.  

Overall, eMedia aims to build a line-up of about 20 channels. This will include at least one news channel and one entertainment channel in each market.  

One channel that will not be available on Openview Stream is eNCA, as it remains exclusive to DStv.  

In short, Openview Stream is eMedia’s first major free streaming push beyond South Africa. It offers a simple, ad-supported way for viewers in selected African countries to watch live TV and on-demand content without a subscription.
