Novelas+ is seen as the premier destination for telenovelas viewed in Mexico, Brazil and Turkey and is currently one of Canal+'s most popular TV channels. It also boast shows like Avenida Brasil, Domenica Montero and Ada Masali.
The launch forms part of Canal+’s broader strategy to expand its content offering across Africa and comes as the company continues to strengthen its relationship with MultiChoice, the DStv operator.
According to Canal+ director for content and general entertainment for English- and Portuguese-speaking Africa, Nomsa Philiso, Turkish dramas have become a worldwide phenomenon especially in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa.
MultiChoice LicenceCo CEO Willington Ngwepe said the new channel follows the recent introduction of Base Pulse, a music and culture-focused channel, and SportyTV, a dedicated 24-hour sports channel.
The decision to add the "+" symbol Novelas TV shouldn't come as a surprise as Canal+ has been known to make their brands align to its corporate styling. This follows the rebranding of the FilmBox channels by SPI International to FilmBox+.
