What The Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery Deal Could Mean For Cartoonito And Nick Jr.

Paramount is looking to finalise its takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery in the coming weeks after settling a months-long dispute over the merger. This would bring Cartoonito and Nick Jr. under the same corporate umbrella, and it’s unclear whether that will ultimately be a good thing for both brands.

Cartoonito is a preschool brand from Warner Bros. Discovery that focuses on fun and comedic programming. Its line-up includes original shows such as Bugs Bunny Builders and Jessica’s Big Little World, alongside third-party titles like Grizzy and the Lemmings, Dino Ranch and Mr. Bean.

In many ways it functions as a preschool equivalent of Comedy Central — aimed at young viewers who need a light-hearted escape. It tries to create a safe, laughter-filled zone that helps melt away the everyday stresses of childhood.

Nick Jr., on the other hand, is operated by Paramount and leans more towards inspirational and engaging content. Its shows include Santiago of the Seas, Dora the Explorer, Nella the Princess Knight, PAW Patrol and Baby Shark’s Big Show.

The channel is designed for parents who want programming that helps boost their child’s self-esteem. While it has educational elements, it doesn’t reach the same structured learning standards as CBeebies or PBS Kids. Instead, it focuses on real-world skills such as teamwork, creative thinking and problem-solving.

Paramount has indicated it intends to keep a large portion of Warner Bros. Discovery intact. This suggests that Cartoonito and Nick Jr. are unlikely to face the kind of cuts seen with channels like MTV Base and BET in 2025. That said, it doesn’t rule out changes to their line-ups in the lead-up to (or after) the deal closes.

Cartoonito has struggled to establish a strong foothold in the United States despite hits like Batwheels. At the same time, Warner Bros. Discovery continued expanding its preschool slate with projects such as Hey BMO! and Foster’s Funtime for Imaginary Friends.

The challenge is that several of these newer shows still lack a clear long-term home. With the Paramount takeover, some of this content is expected to migrate toward Nick Jr.

Nick Jr. has stronger global recognition and a history that stretches back to the 1980s, whereas Cartoonito originated in the mid-2000s in the UK and Europe. For this reason, many expect Nick Jr. to take the lead in the preschool space under the combined company.

Cartoonito could lean more toward shows such as Mr. Bean and Grizzy and the Lemmings, potentially operating as a complementary or extension brand to Nick Jr. — similar to how Candle Media has structured its Moonbug and Blippi and Friends channels internationally.

One possible approach is for Nick Jr. to offer a programming block on Cartoonito featuring older titles such as Nella the Princess Knight, Bubble Guppies and Rusty Rivets.

In short, while both preschool brands are expected to survive the merger in some form, significant content sharing and restructuring appear likely as Paramount looks to streamline operations and manage debt.
